Alms Giving: A Buddhist Tradition In Laos

Every morning as the sun rises in the UNESCO town of Luang Prabang, the alms-giving ceremony commences on the streets of Laos. Beginning on the main street before spreading out to all the streets, the monks move about in a long line accepting rice and food in this Buddhist ceremony.

Over the recent years, this has become a very popular tourist activity when visiting Laos. Always remember, the ceremony is a very deep and meaningful one for the local people of Laos, many of whom have been participating for generations.

While keeping your social distance from the procession of monks, remain quiet and do not make physical contact with a Buddhist Monk. It also not recommended to participate in the alms giving ceremony, unless you are practicing Buddhist.
